Course overview
This program has a specialist ESL English component for young people from Non-English Speaking Backgrounds. The course concentrates on career investigation, developing work readiness, literacy skills and personal development.
Students participate in a range of taster programs which could include programs such as furnishing, hospitality and sport and recreation, plus a range of other options. Work placement and the taster programs are organised to assist young people make future career decisions.

What employment opportunities will I have?
The Foundation VCAL course develops general skills that increase your eligibility for entry level jobs and employment. After successfully completing this course you can continue on to higher levels of study.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will gain skills that increase your employability, such as literacy and numeracy, problem solving, organisation and planning. You will also develop hands-on skills for various trades, industry areas, general knowledge and interpersonal skills.
What qualifications will I receive?
On successful completion of the course you will receive a Foundation level VCAL certificate.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
You will become eligible to apply for higher level courses, such as Intermediate and Senior VCAL courses, higher level TAFE certificates or pre-apprenticeships.
Can I apply?
There are no set educational requirements to apply for this course. You can apply if you are 16 to 21 years old and from a Non-English Speaking Background.
How do I apply?
Course applications will be taken from October 2011. If you wish to apply for this course, you must obtain an application form from the Institute. Call us on 13 TAFE (13 8233) or email enquiries@kangan.edu.au. This course has a mid-year intake.

You will need to attend an interview.
How long is the course?
One year full-time.
Where and how can I study?
This is a full-time course run at the Broadmeadows campus.
How will I be assessed?
A mixture of practical tutorials, project work and written tests will be used in assessing this course. Assessment is a necessary part of this program, to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge set out in the competency standards. You will be adviced in advance about the assessment procedure and criteria. There will also be opportunity for appeal and reassessment and you will be provided with this information.

This course has usually has two intakes per year. One in February and one in July.
