Course overview
Intro to VCAL is a mid-year entry program that runs through Semester 2 for young people considering their pathway options.
Students will undertake a range of units from the VCAL and VET to help them decide what to study next. Students choose from a range of taster programs such as multimedia, furnishing, retail, automotive, sport and recreation.
Work placement and taster programs are organised to assist young people make future career decisions. Students successfully completing this program will finish the year with 6 - 8 units towards their foundation VCAL.

What employment opportunities will I have?
The Introduction to VCAL course develops general skills that increase your eligibility for entry level jobs. After successfully completing this course you can also continue on to higher levels of study. On successful completion of the program students will receive entry to VCE (if desired).
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will gain skills that increase your employability, such as literacy and numeracy, problem solving and organisational and planning. You will also develop hands-on skills for various industries, general knowledge and interpersonal skills.
What qualifications will I receive?
On successful completion of the course students will receive 6 - 8 units toward a foundation VCAL certificate.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
Successful completion of this course provides access into VCAL and VCE. Students may also decide to move into pre-apprenticeship courses.
Can I apply?
There are no set educational requirements to apply for this course. You can apply if you are 15 to 21 years old and have literacy and numeracy skills sufficient to complete the course.
How do I apply?
Course applications will be taken from October 2011.If you wish to apply for this course, you must obtain an application form from the Institute. Call us on 13 TAFE (13 8233) or email enquiries@kangan.edu.au. This course only has a mid-year intake.
How will I be selected for this course?
You will need to attend an interview and complete a basic literacy and numeracy assessment.
How long is the course?
5 months.
Where and how can I study?
This is a full-time course run at the Broadmeadows campus.
How will I be assessed?
A mixture of practical tutorials, project work and written tests will be used in assessing this course. Assessment is a necessary part of this program, to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge set out in the competency standards. You will be adviced in advance about the assessment procedure and criteria. There will also be opportunity for appeal and reassessment and you will be provided with this information.

Students will undertake units in: Literacy and Numeracy, Personal Development, Work Related Skills and an Industry Taster.
