Course overview

This is a program for students who want a pathway into the furnishing industry. As part of the course, you will complete a Certificate II in Furnishing -Cabinetmaking, Certificate II in Polishing and Certificate II in Machining. You will also work as part of a team to set up a business, make and market furniture, whilst completing your Senior Secondary Certificate.

What employment opportunities will I have?

The VCAL course develops general skills that increase your eligibility for trade training and employment. Graduates can go on to apprenticeships in furnishing or polishing.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain skills that increase your employability, such as literacy and numeracy, problem solving and organisational and planning. You will also develop hands-on skills for work in the furnishing industry, general knowledge and interpersonal skills.

What qualifications will I receive?

You will receive either a Intermediate or Senior level VCAL certificate, as well as a Certificate II in Furnishing (Cabinet Making) Certificate II in Machining and a Certificate II in Polishing.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

Credit transfers may be available into the Certificate III in Furniture Making which is supported by Furnishing Training Victoria and the furnishing industry.

Can I apply?

You can apply if you are aged 15 and above with sufficient literacy and numeracy skills and a genuine desire to enter the furnishing industry.

How do I apply?

To apply for this course, you must obtain an application form from the Institute. Course applications will be taken from October 2011. This course may also have a mid-year intake. How will I be selected for this course?

You will need to attend an interview and sit a literacy and numeracy test.

How long is the course?

Where and how can I study?

This is a full-time program run at the Broadmeadows campus.

How will I be assessed?

A mixture of practical tutorials, project work and written tests will be used in assessing this course. Assessment is a necessary part of this program, to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge set out in the competency standards. You will be informed in advance about the assessment procedure and criteria. There will also be opportunity for appeal and reassessment and you will be provided with this information.

Information about the VCAL is also available on the Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority (VCAA) web site. Course applications will be taken from mid October 2011.

What will I study?

The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning is made up of 4 strands: - Literacy and Numeracy - Personal Development - Industry Related Skills - Work Related Skills.

As part of the Certificate II in Furnishing you will undertake: introduction to the furnishing industry; OHS; workplace environment; calculations; communications; introduction to materials; information technology; hand tools and equipment; power tools and equipment; materials handling; construction - basic; drawing/sketching; working with others; surface preparation; basic static machines and equipment; plan reading and documentation; quality principles; frame construction; modular construction; leg and rail construction; drawer construction; door construction; solid timber construction; basic furniture polishing, and practical placement.
