Course overview

This course is designed specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People; however this does not exclude non Indigenous people. The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is a senior school certificate that focuses on hands-on learning and practical skills, supported by tutors, mentors and Koori community Elders. With VCAL you can go on to further education, training or employment. VCAL has three levels - Foundation, Intermediate and Senior. You will be personally assessed to ensure that you start at a level that matches your needs and abilities.

What costs and other fees should I expect?

What employment opportunities will I have?

VCAL Intermediate course develops general skills which increase your eligibility for further study, trade, training and employability.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain skills which will increase your employability, such as literacy and numeracy, problem solving and organisational and planning. You will also develop a portfolio, undertake work experience, gain valuable general knowledge and interpersonal skills.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (Intermediate). As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

Can I apply?

There are no set prerequisites for this course. However it is recommended that you have numeracy and literacy skills equivalent to VCAL Foundation to undertake this course or are of mature age.
OR
You may apply if you have satisfactorily completed VCE or an approved equivalent course and the satisfactory completion of the work requirements (eligibility to transfer); or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course. (Mature age is anyone over the age of 18 who has been out of full-time education for more than 12 months.)

How do I apply?

You may apply directly to the Indigenous Education Centre at the Gunung Willam Balluk Learning Centre, Kangan Batman TAFE, Broadmeadows campus on 9279 2351.

How will I be selected for this course?

You will need to contact the Gunung-Willam-Balluk Indigenous Education Centre and attend an interview, in some instances an audition and finally an induction.

How long is the course?

The course spans 12 months.

Where and how can I study?

You will study at the Gunung Willam Balluk, Indigenous Education Centre, Building W at the Broadmeadows campus of Kangan Batman TAFE.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through a combination of written, oral and practical assessment methods. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate.

Additional comments

All Indigenous Australians over the age of 15 years, will be accepted into the course based on prior academic ability, interest and practical application. Every student is eligible for two hours a week of tutoring to ensure of the best possible outcome for all students.
