With more than 30,000 enrolments each year, Kangan Institute is a major training provider for the automotive, health and nursing sectors and indigenous education. We also have a strong presence in a range of industries such as fashion, business as well as justice and legal.

As one of the state's largest providers of apprenticeship and traineeship training, we have strong relationships with many businesses and cater for students seeking industry-relevant training in a wide range of disciplines and on-site training options to suit the unique needs of the individual learner or organisation.

Our courses range from basic certificate to diploma and advanced diploma levels, with pathways to over 25 university degrees. Our Skills Recognition program assesses prior knowledge and experience, awarding our students with the credits or qualification to match their existing skills.

With more than 80 years of experience in vocational education and training, we are a flexible, innovative and dynamic place of learning with a rich multicultural atmosphere. Our programs are delivered across four campuses in Broadmeadows, Docklands, Essendon and Cremorne.

Kangan Institute and vocational English teacher win national training awards

Kangan Institute has been named Australia’s top large training provider for 2022 at the Australian Training Awards in Adelaide on Friday night.

Kangan Institute CEO Sally Curtain said she was proud of the impact Kangan Institute has had on students, industry and the local community.

“It’s an honour to be recognised nationally for all the hard work our people do to make a real difference to the lives of thousands of students who choose to study with us each year.

“Our mission is to empower people, our community and industry with the skills to make a bright future, and awards like these are a really important mark of our success,” Ms Curtain said.

Timeline

1857 – November 27, the City of Broadmeadows is formed.

1871 – January 27, Broadmeadows becomes a Shire.

1925 - Richmond Technical School is established, delivering motor mechanics training as

part of the post-Depression Youth Employment Scheme.

1956 – Broadmeadows is declared a city by the Governor of Victoria, Sir Dallas Brooks.

1970 - Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) transfers its automotive training

programs to Batman Automotive College, Coburg.

1974 – The acronym ‘TAFE’ (Technical and Further Education) is adopted throughout

Australia after Kangan Institute’s report of the Australian Committee on Technical and

Further Education (ACOTAFE) expressed a new philosophy and policy basis for TAFE.

1979 - Overcrowding splits Richmond Technical School's secondary education and TAFE

functions into Richmond Technical School and Richmond College of TAFE.

1985 - Broadmeadows College of TAFE is established

1986 – February 28, Broadmeadows College of TAFE officially opens by the Hon. R. J. L.

Hawke A. C. M. P., Prime Minister of Australia.

1993 – April 18, Avondale Heights officially opens as a Broadmeadows College of TAFE

campus.

1994 - Moorabbin and Richmond Colleges of TAFE merge to form the Richmond

Automotive Campus of Barton Institute of TAFE. It eventually became known as the Barton

Institute of TAFE.

1994 – December 15, Hume City Council is formally created to incorporate sections of the

former Shire of Bulla, City of Broadmeadows, City of Whittlesea and City of Keilor.

1994 – August 15, Aerospace Industry Training Centre was officially opened by the Hon.

Paul Keating M.P. Prime Minister of Australia, at Broadmeadows campus (Building T for

transport).

1995 - Broadmeadows College of TAFE changes its name to Kangan Institute of TAFE, in

honour of Myer Kangan OBE AO, the founder of Australia's TAFE system

1997 - John Batman and Kangan Institutes of TAFE amalgamate to form ‘Kangan Batman

TAFE’.

1998 - Kangan Batman TAFE acquires Barton Institute of TAFE’s Richmond Automotive

Campus of Barton Institute of TAFE

2006 - Kangan Batman TAFE opens its newest campus - Automotive Centre of Excellence -

Docklands

2010 – The name “Kangan Institute” is unveiled after thirteen years operating as Kangan

Batman TAFE.

2011 – Moonee Ponds campus opens.

2014 - May 23, Kangan Institute merges with Bendigo TAFE.

2021 – New Bendigo City Campus Revitalisation Project is complete, Upgrades to the

Broadmeadows campus commences including the Plumbing Centre, The CEO announces a

multi-million dollar new building dedicated to health sciences at Broadmeadows.
