This course is designed to give you a basic understanding of the different mild steel welding processes including oxy acetylene welding, thermal cutting, mig welding, arc welding, spot welding and bronze welding. You can then apply these basic skills to various projects requiring welding, including vehicle restoration, hobby metal work and welding repairs.
This course is ideal for individuals who would like to pick up basic welding skills that will assist in vehicle restoration, hobby metal work or welding repairs. It is designed to be hands-on and to introduce course participants to the techniques required to weld mild steel.
Participants will learn the different types of welding techniques including mig, oxy and spot. They will learn how to safely set up and close down welding equipment; knowledge of the types of welding consumable materials including welding wire, rods and fluxes; how to do a butt, lap, and corner weld using different welding applications; and how to cut mild steel using thermal cutting equipment.

The Docklands campus is centrally located with easy access to public transport and within walking distance to Southern Cross station. There is no parking available at the campus however public parking is available within easy walking distance to the Docklands campus (see map).
What you receive at the completion of the course?
Participants will receive a Statement of Participation on successful completion of the course.
Pre-requisite & eligibility requirements
There are no prerequisites for this course however participants will need to be comfortable using power tools and welding equipment.
Participants in this course are required to provide and wear safety clothing and footwear which will include a long sleeve shirt, pants (preferably overalls) and full cover closed shoe, preferably work boots or shoes.
Personal protective equipment such as eye, hearing and welding protection will be supplied; however participants may bring their own.
Kangan Institute's main campus is located approximately 20km from the CBD. Broadmeadows houses purpose-built specialist training facilities such as the Aviation Industry Training Centre, the Transport and Logistics Centre and the Polymer Engineering Centre. It also houses the Gunung-Willam-Balluk Learning Centre for Indigenous students, as well as our fully licensed, hospitality training facility, Richards Restaurant.
The campus is a five-minute walk from the Broadmeadows Town Hall, and is directly opposite Broadmeadows Shopping Centre. Parking available on campus.
