2013 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MIFGS)
The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MIFGS) is a world renowned annual event. Kangan Institute students are often represented at the show which provides an exciting opportunity to showcase their creativity and talents to important industry representatives.
In 2013, Certificate III in Horticulture graduate Craig Burchat represented Kangan Institute and showcased his unique 'Surf & Turf' in the Avenue of Achievable Gardens.
Currently a Natural Landscapes landscaper, Craig shares his inspiration behind the entry:
"My passion in landscaping is bringing together the old and the new worlds, combining classic design with new age style. I try to use clean lines and soft curves to subtly accentuate bold features.
As most of us in this country live within an hour of the coast, we all know how nice it is to get down to the beach on a hot summer's day. Bringing together several different coastal elements, the 'Surf & Turf' design attempts to capture the essence of the city beach lifestyle.
The blue stone paving provides a perfect platform to take in the ocean vista. You may find yourself taking a stroll across the soft sands or reclining in the dinghy sofa in the shade provided by the sails with a loved one and a glass of bubbly.
Care was taken with the plant selection, in that they are either native or drought resistant. Different types of grasses were utilised to showcase their simple beauty and elegance. Palms and strelitzias infuse the design with a tropical beach feel. The fescue and cushion bushes represent the surf crashing on the beach.
Overall the garden provides a secluded tropical getaway from the hectic day to day routine."
