What are apprenticeships and traineeships?
Apprenticeships and traineeships are a great option for anyone looking to get a job or take their career in a different direction. At Kangan Institute we create personalised training plans for each of our apprentices, with the skills and technical knowledge that’s specific to your workplace, trade or vocation. All our apprenticeship and traineeship programs incorporate learning that takes place in the workplace. As a Kangan Institute apprentice or trainee we can help you to kick-start your career with both on and off-the-job training. It’s this blended approach to your learning that will help you to graduate with confidence, experience and ready for the workforce with real skills.
Is an apprenticeship or traineeship right for me?
It depends on what you want to study and the career outcomes you hope to achieve.
If you are interested in working in a skilled trade such as building, hairdressing, commercial cookery, automotive or electrical then an apprenticeship is for you. If you are interested in working in a vocational role such as office administration or information technology than a traineeship will get you started.
How to start an apprenticeship or traineeship
You can begin while you’re still at school finishing Year 11 or 12. You don’t need a secondary school certificate or other qualification to start an apprenticeship although this is highly regarded by most employers. As an apprentice you will earn an income while you learn your trade. You can study a variety of qualification levels in most occupations including hairdressing, commercial cookery, building and horticulture.
You can combine time at work with training, which can be either full-time, part-time or school-based. When you finish your apprenticeship, you will have a nationally recognised qualification that can take you anywhere in Australia and to many overseas countries as well.
Step 1: Preparation and research.
Figure out what trade you are interested in, do research on job opportunities and write or update your resume. Please contact the Employment Centre or the Skills and Jobs Centre for career and employment advice and support.
Step 2: Job hunting.
Start applying for jobs through networking with people you know, online or via Jobactive providers.
Step 3: Sign up.
Once you’ve found an employer, you both must contact an Apprenticeship Network Provider (ANP – formerly an AASN). Select Kangan Institute as your preferred training provider to get started.
