350 students participate in Kangan Institutes Trade and Employment day

Students looking to start a new apprenticeship or enter a trade had the perfect opportunity to get hands-on, ask questions and explore their options at Kangan Institute's inaugural Trade and Employment day held on 10th October 2012.

Held at Broadmeadows campus, the event covered trades such as aviation, building and construction, horticulture and engineering, and included industry demonstrations, practical activities and on-the-spot registration with group training organisations.

More than 350 students attended, including nearly 50 attendees from local secondary schools. Pre-vocational, VCE and VCAL students at Kangan Institute also participated. The event included:

  • Real-life demonstrations by industry partners.
  • Opportunities for students to try a trade.
  • Information about training and employment options.
  • Opportunities to meet and register with group training organisations such as Aplus and CVGT.
  • Assistance with career planning and education pathway options from Kangan Institute's NEXT STEP service staff.
  • Free food, Kangan Institute's Indigenous Education Centre live band and a lucky draw competition.

Diana McGowan, apprenticeships and traineeships coordinator, said that the event was hugely successful, with many attendees achieving some real outcomes.

"Many students registered with group training organisations on the day which now means they are one step closer to starting a paid apprenticeship next year," she said.

"Judging from the positive feedback received from students and their teachers, we're definitely looking to bring this event back next year and will potentially cover more trade and study areas."

Kangan Institute will also be holding a free Automotive Employment Advice day on Tuesday 23rd October 2012 at Docklands campus (Automotive Centre of Excellence). Interested students are welcome to attend and meet potential employers, learn about transitioning into employment as well as explore job opportunities in the automotive industry.
