Many vocational and higher education courses at Kangan Institute require placement. Check your course handbook or unit descriptions for placement requirements or contact your Course Coordinator.

Kangan Institute partners with a wide variety of host organisations — from large institutions to small local businesses, non-profits, clinics, schools, workshops, and service providers — depending on the field of study.

Yes. Every host must complete and sign a Placement Agreement with Kangan Institute prior to hosting students. This outlines roles, responsibilities, and legal obligations.

1.      Will discuss with the Education Provider the type of activities which the student will undertake on practical placement to ensure they are:

a.      Relevant and directly related to, and at the appropriate skill level, for the training outcomes of the unit of competency or course the student is undertaking, and

b.      Useful for the vocation and employment outcomes of the unit or course.

2.      Will plan and carry out the student’s program of activities in accordance with the considerations set out in ‘Relevant skills the student will demonstrate’.

3.      Has read and understood the Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions Practical Placement Guidelines. To access the guidelines, please click here.

4.      Will consult with the Industry Placement Coordinator/Education Provider Representative if they consider it necessary to terminate the arrangement before the agreed practical placement end date.

5.      Will nominate a supervisor (or supervisors) for the student and ensure that required planning, induction, supervision, training and safe systems of work are provided for the student to maintain a safe and healthy work experience at all times.

6.      Will comply with relevant occupational health and safety and workplace relations legislation and standards with respect to the student.

7.      Will permit the Education Provider’s Industry Placement Coordinator or Assessors to access the workplace and contact the student at any reasonable time during the practical placement.

8.      Will ensure that the practical placement arrangement is not used as a substitute for the employment of employees or the engagement of contractors.

9.      Will maintain the confidentiality of any health information that has been disclosed in relation to the student and will only disclose this information to another party if treatment is required for a known medical condition or in the case of a medical emergency.

10. Will notify the Industry Placement Coordinator or Education Provider Representative as soon as practicable if the student is absent, injured or becomes ill while undertaking the practical placement.

11. In case of an emergency, the Host Organisation will contact the student’s emergency contact person and the Industry Placement Coordinator.

12. Will make its relevant by-laws, policies, manuals, guidelines, protocols, procedures and any other relevant information readily available to Students for them to successfully undertake their placement.

13. Child Safe Standards: Promote a culture of child safety and comply with Child Safety Laws.

14. Report child safety concerns regarding a student on placement who is under the age of 18 to the Education Provider representative.

1.      Ensuring there is a written practical placement agreement between the Education Provider and the Host Organisation prior to commencement of placement.

2.      Ensuring that the work experience undertaken by the student on practical placement is:

a. directly related to, and is at the appropriate skill level, for the training outcomes of the unit of competency or course it is providing, and

b. useful for vocation and employment outcomes of the course it is providing.

3.      Ensuring that the maximum duration of its student’s practical placement is 240 hours in total, and a maximum of 38 hours to be worked in any one week. If more than a total of 240 hours, or 38 hours per week is required, the RTO is responsible for justifying that additional hours are required to meet the course outcomes for the student concerned, having regard to the welfare of the student concerned.

4.      Keeping records detailing the reason for any decision to require its student to undertake more than a total of 240 hours or 38 hours per week, for the practical placement component of the course or unit of competency the student is undertaking.

5.      Securely filing the signed original of this agreement and giving a copy to both the Employer and the student.

6.      Reading and understanding the Department of Education and Training Update Practical Placement Guidelines.

7.      Child Safe Standards: As a child safe organisation, promote a culture of child safety and comply with Child Safety Laws.

8.      Ensure host organisations requiring student police check and working with children check information are provided this information. 

1.      Agree to take part in this practical placement arrangement as part of their vocational training and agree this does not constitute an employment relationship between the student and the Host Organisation.

2.      Will carry out all reasonable and lawful directions of the Host Organisation and perform their work to the best of their ability.

3.      Will comply with all reasonable workplace rules and requirements governing safety and behaviour.

4.      Will attend the workplace on each day at the agreed time.

5.      Will inform both the Host Organisation and the Industry Placement Coordinator/Education Provider contact, as soon as practicable if they are unable to attend work.

6.      Will promptly inform the Host Organisation and the Industry Placement Coordinator of any accident, injury or incident that may occur.

7.      Will abide by the professional standards set by industry and the Education Provider, including dressing in accordance with workplace guidelines.

8.      Will be responsible for their transport to and from the workplace.

9.      Agree to details of Pre Placement Requirements to be released to the Host Organisation.

10. Will inform the Industry Placement Coordinator and Host Organisation of any necessary health information, including details of any known medical condition which may affect them and any medication or treatment which may be necessary. Any applicable health information can be attached to this agreement on a separate sheet.

11. Authorise the Host Organisation or their staff, in the event of an illness or accident, to obtain all necessary medical assistance and treatment and transport to hospital accommodation and that any fees and expenses incurred will be paid by the student.

12. That they have been provided with a logbook in order to satisfy assessment criteria set by the Teaching Department and have been informed of their rights in relation to making an appeal or notifying of a grievance/complaint.

13. That they have been informed of the mechanisms/resources available to them in the event of a dispute during the practical placement.

14. That they will abide by legislation and regulation relating to the safety and care of other workers, clients or patients of the practical training provider.

15. That they have been provided with a copy of this agreement and have been given information on where to access the Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions Practical Placement Guidelines.

16. That they have the right to be informed if Kangan Institute or another party delivering training on their behalf closes or ceases to deliver any part of the training that the student is enrolled in.

17. Child Safe Standards: Promote a culture of child safety and comply with Child Safety Laws.

18. Abide by the host organisation's Child Safety code of conduct, policy and procedures where applicable.

No. Practical placements arranged as part of a Kangan Institute course are considered vocational placements and are unpaid, as they are part of the course requirements however, in July 2025, eligible nursing students will be able to access the Commonwealth Prac Payment (benchmarked to the single Austudy rate) while they’re undertaking a placement.

Yes. Depending on the industry and host, students may need to obtain one (or more) of the following:

National Crime Check (Police Check)

Immunisations,

NDIS Worker Screening Check These must be completed before placement commencement.

Kangan Institute maintains insurance policies that cover students during placements, including:

Personal Accident / Medical cover (non-Medicare medical expenses)

Public Liability

Professional Indemnity (for certain courses)

Hosts should maintain their own appropriate insurances (e.g. Public Liability, Workers’ Compensation) as needed.

Placement hours generally follow standard workplace patterns (e.g. up to ~38 hours/week) but may be adapted depending on course and industry. Typically, placements run for up to 7.5/8 hours per day (excluding meal breaks). For many courses, 7.5 hours/day is standard (excluding lunch breaks). 

The host should manage immediate safety, administer first aid and notify Kangan Institute.

Students must follow host injury/incident reporting procedures.

Kangan Institute’s placement staff will assist with any incident investigation or support.

Any student misconduct or performance concerns should be reported to Kangan Institute immediately.

 

In certain industries and situations, yes — but this must be discussed with Kangan Institute in advance. Employment should not conflict with placement responsibilities or assessments.

 

Generally, hosts are not paid for providing placement; however, some health courses or funding programs are eligible for paid placement. Please check with the Kangan Institute Placement Team.

For many of our course’s students are required to wear a uniform. This ensures that students meet the health and safety requirements of both Kangan Institute and the Industry Placement Host Organisation. Students are not required to supply any resources or materials for placement.
