Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician
Alexia initially pursued a degree in criminology and psychology at university. However, she soon realised that her passion did not align with the subjects she was studying or the learning approach.
“I needed something more hands on. Sitting in lectures and stuff like that was a bit hard for me,” Alexia said.
Seeking a more hands on career, Alexia consulted with friends who suggested she try a trade. She experimented with carpentry but soon found herself gravitating towards the electrical trade. On seeing a job posting for an electrical apprenticeship at John Holland, Alexia applied and secured the apprenticeship.
Studying the Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician at Kangan Institute provided Alexia with the hands-on learning environment and the support and resources she needed to succeed.
“I had really great teachers and really good friends as well that I made at school. That made the journey really, really easy and four years flew by,” Alexia said
Throughout her apprenticeship, Alexia has worked on several significant projects, including Level Crossing Removals, Westgate Tunnel and Metro Tunnel.
“I love the challenge that it brings. It's something new every day. It's just rewarding; it makes you feel good because you've done something and you've contributed to something that's made someone else's life easier,” Alexia said.
As Alexia approaches the completion of her apprenticeship, she is considering furthering her education in project management.
“I'm considering going back and studying project management – just trying to get myself another foot up so I can get further in the industry,” Alexia said.
Alexia was named Outstanding Women in Trade Apprentice of the Year at Kangan Institute’s 2025 Industry Excellence Awards.
