Robert spent eight years in the jewellery industry. However, he soon realised the industry wasn’t aligning with his long-term goals.
“I was a jeweler for eight years, and then, one thing led to another and that industry sort of wasn’t panning out for me,” Robert said.
Seeking a career change, Robert was offered an opportunity at Nestlé as a production operator. It was there that he observed the work of the onsite mechanical fitters, which sparked a new interest.
“I got the opportunity to see what the mechanical fitters did on site. Seeing them every day really inspired me to want to use my hands the same way they do,” Robert said.
At 31, Robert embarked on a new career path by beginning his mechanical fitting apprenticeship. As a mature-aged student, he understands the unique challenges of returning to study later in life.
“You definitely work your life out around it because of what you're gaining at the end of a qualification,” Robert said.
Studying the Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade at Kangan Institute provided Robert with access to resources to succeed. He also decided to further his studies by completing a Certificate IV in Engineering.
“You've got amazing teachers and resources at your fingertips,” Robert said
Robert is currently working in the mechanical fitting department at Nestlé, where he is applying key skills in hydraulics and pneumatics gained through his Certificate IV, and experiencing the career benefits of his training.
“That's where the Cert IV knowledge that I gained have really come into play in my trade,” Robert said.
Robert was awarded three accolades at Kangan Institute’s 2025 Industry Excellence Awards - Apprentice of the Year: Engineering (Mechanical), Apprentice of the Year: Trade Skills Centre and Outstanding Student: Certificate IV in Engineering.
