Apprenticeships and Traineeships

The Australian Apprenticeship Program consists of both Apprenticeships and Traineeships. This employment-based program is designed to deliver comprehensive training by combining practical workplace experience with structured formal study.

While apprentices and trainees are employed in the workplace, they engage in hands-on activities that build practical skills, where they learn directly from experienced industry experts. Supervisors have a duty to ensure that the training is relevant and applicable to real work activities.

The formal study component is delivered by Bendigo Kangan Institute (BKI). This includes theoretical training and coursework, which complements the work they are undertaking in the workplace.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are predominately programs for skilled trades and are usually longer in duration. BKI is pleased to offer the below qualifications:

Traineeships

Traineeships cover broader and often non-trade vocational areas with a shorter duration than a traditional apprenticeship. BKI is pleased to offer the below qualifications:

School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships

A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SBAT) gives secondary school students paid on-the-job training with vocational training while they complete secondary school.

SBAT students have a unique arrangement as there are multiple parties involved in the success of the apprentice or trainee such as the school, the student, parent/guardians, you as the employer and BKI.

There are many factors to be considered when engaging an SBAT including consideration of all secondary school commitments, the requirements of the apprenticeship or traineeship, with one day per week on the job training taking place during a normal school week.

SBAT training contracts can continue after the student has left school with a contract variation. This can be as a part-time or full-time apprenticeship or traineeship.
