A fine career outcome for pathology graduate Sheridan Viti

Ever wondered what it takes to start a career in pathology? According to pathology graduate Sheridan Viti, great teachers, strong technical knowledge and plenty of passion were some of the things that made a real difference to her journey. Sheridan completed the Certificate IV in Pathology at Kangan Institute which included a hands-on, industry practical placement. Within the same week of completing the course, she gained employment as a pathology collector at Melbourne Pathology, one of Victoria's most established and highly regarded medical testing laboratories. "The pathology course really prepared me well for my current role as a pathology collector - the course curriculum was set out really well; all the topics we covered over different classes integrated into the other," she said. "The teachers were sensational! They were all so helpful and with their many years of workplace experience were able to give us real workplace scenarios and practical tools to take with us in to the workforce." As a mature age student, Sheridan was initially hesitant about returning to study after a long time but she found that Kangan Institute provided the necessary support to help her along the way. "Kangan Institute made it easy to integrate back to study and by offering a night course I was able to continue with my other commitments," she said. "I think the teachers really made the difference for me personally. I found them approachable and passionate about my learning journey and I believe the fantastic coaching and encouragement from my teachers gave me all the technical skills that a prospective employer was looking for." Ryan Deery, Human Resources Manager - Patient Services at Melbourne Pathology, stated that candidates entering the organisation as a pathology collector are required to have completed a Certificate III or Certificate IV in Pathology, possess the relevant technical skills as well as demonstrate a strong work ethic and the core values of the organisation. Students from Kangan Institute consistently meet these requirements. "Kangan Institute graduates enter the workforce with a strong skill set and an understanding of the professional environment they are entering. With exemplary training provided by educators with relevant industry experience, Kangan graduates consistently demonstrate a workforce readiness as well as an in-depth understanding of the pathology industry and the importance of pathology in the delivery of healthcare to the community," he said. "In addition to this, they possess an enthusiasm and a drive to put the skills they have learnt into practice." When asked about her future plans, Sheridan shares that her main goal now is to focus on developing her skills within her current work. "Perhaps further study - most definitely with Kangan! At the moment I'm loving my job and there is still so much to learn," she said. "I love my job, the company I work for is fantastic and I have Kangan and their terrific staff to thank for that!" We congratulate Sheridan on her new role and wish her the very best in her future endeavours! Inspired to study pathology?
