Budding carpenter on show representing Kangan Institute - News

In October 2011, Adrian Jones from St Bernard's College in Essendon took part in a regional competition for VET carpentry students attending Kangan Institute.

As a result of this competition, Adrian was selected to represent Kangan Institute in the Victorian World Skills Competition. The World Skills event had representatives from TAFE colleges throughout Victoria compete in a carpentry competition.

Kangan Institute had four representatives competing in the last event held at Victoria University. Winners were given the opportunity to represent Victoria in the nationals.

Adrian placed 2nd and as a result he's been selected to represent Kangan Institute, St Bernards College and Victoria in the National World Skills Competition at the Sydney Showgrounds, Sydney Olympic Park on 31 August through to 3 September 2012.

At the national competition, Adrian will be required to construct a garden arbor incorporating a seat and basic roof frame.

Adrian has been training hard for this competition and we wish him the very best. On 22 August 2012, a week before the nationals, Kangan Institute (headed by carpentry teacher Phillip Love) threw a BBQ in celebration of Adrian's achievements.

Students, teachers and representatives from his school St Bernard's were in attendance. Phillip said he was very proud of Adrian. "Adrian has put in a heap of work for this, coming into the workshop outside of school hours to prepare," he said.

"I want to congratulate Adrian on his efforts. He set his goals and he worked hard to achieve those goals and he's a shining example for other to follow." Adrian himself in turn thanked his teachers and Kangan Institute for the great start they've given him.

"I've really spent a lot of time preparing for this," he said, before looking to his fellow students and concluding: "I'd like to encourage all first years to come back next year and give it a go."
