Hong Kong Business of Design Week 2018 - Kangan

Participating student Akira Toyama also showcased her designs at Kangan Institute’s Rags to Runway fashion show in September.

Kangan Institute has been selected by the Victorian Government to present a student fashion and millinery exhibition at Asia’s premier design event, Hong Kong Business of Design Week, in December 2018.

The ‘Great Southern Style’ exhibition will run from 1-9 December and present collections by eight Kangan Institute students reflecting mindful and sustainable Australian design.

The exhibition will form part of the Victorian Government’s Melbourne Fashion Showcase featuring more than 50 Victorian designers in one of the state’s largest ever international presentation of design.

“It’s an incredible honour to be invited to showcase at Business of Design Week in Hong Kong,” said Kangan Institute CEO Trevor Schwenke.

“We’re looking forward to this opportunity to join Victorian designers, design organisations and institutions in showcasing our state’s diversity and creativity, which includes emerging talents from Victorian TAFEs like Kangan Institute.”

Creativity, technical prowess and attention to sustainable principles were key criteria in selecting students for the showcase, with fashion students Akira Toyama, Megan Taylor, Lisa Barty and Umi Rasmi, and millinery students Lisa Hughes, Sharon Schreurs, Anita Marshall and Catherine Quartermain making the final line-up.

“Well done to the talented students who were selected to represent Kangan Institute at this exhibition,” said Mr. Schwenke.

“Their designs are truly phenomenal and most deserving of being on the international stage. I’m confident this showcase will lead them to many more exciting career opportunities down the track.”

Melbourne is the partner city for this year’s Business of Design Week, an annual event organised by the Hong Kong Design Centre in partnership with an international city or country recognised globally for the strength of its design sector.

Under the theme “Think · Collaborate · Create”, Melbourne’s program in the Business of Design Week will involve over 160 speakers and exhibitors, and 170 trade mission delegates from more than 100 companies.
