Kangan Institute and Foton Mobility Distribution lead the charge in hydrogen vehicle training

Kangan Institute and Foton Mobility Distribution (FMD) have launched a groundbreaking training solution to drive Victoria’s clean energy future.

The TAFE and hydrogen vehicle leader have co-designed a pilot program that equips workers with skills to work with hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV), an emerging technology reducing transport emissions.

Backed by the Victorian Government’s Skills Solutions Partnerships program, the pilot program will include:

  • Specialist training for technicians servicing hydrogen FCEVs

  • Safety-focused programs for business owners supporting FCEV adoption

  • Upskilling for TAFE teachers from across Australia

  • New FCEV training units, developed by the Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance (AUSMASA)

  • High-quality course materials to be used widely across the sector

  • New hydrogen safety technology installed at Kangan Institute’s Automotive Centre of Excellence

This initiative positions Kangan Institute and FMD to lead Victoria’s acceleration to a zero-emissions future, training the workforce to service hydrogen-powered transport.

Kangan Institute’s Automotive Centre of Excellence Docklands Campus is the largest purpose-built automotive training facility in the southern hemisphere, training up to 5,000 students annually across over 25 specialised areas. With world-class diagnostic labs and a $1.4 million electric vehicle lab, it is uniquely positioned to deliver the next generation of clean energy training.

“This partnership is about preparing today’s workforce for tomorrow’s technology. As hydrogen vehicles roll onto Australian roads, we need expert technicians who can service them safely.

“Kangan Institute is proud to lead the charge alongside FMD – delivering the hands-on training Victoria needs to drive its clean economy future.”

Quote attributable to Foton Mobility Distribution CEO Neil Wang

“At FMD we have had a simple philosophy from Day 1 – deliver a quality product at a competitive price, and back it up with the best after sales experience possible. We soon realised that in order to have a major influence on the zero emissions transition, we also needed to share our decades of knowledge of BEV and FCEV vehicles.

“This partnership with Kangan Institute provides us with the perfect platform to pass on that knowledge, and we look forward to seeing the positive outcomes of this collaboration.”
