Sod turned on Melton’s new TAFE campus

Construction has officially begun on Kangan Institute’s new Melton campus, with a sod-turning event marking the start of works on one of Victoria’s most significant new TAFE developments.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Skills and Training, The Hon Gabrielle Williams, joined community members, industry partners and project stakeholders at the Cobblebank site to celebrate a milestone that will bring expanded training opportunities to one of Melbourne’s fastest-growing regions.

Supported by a $55 million Victorian Government investment, the Melton campus will provide access to high-demand skills and training closer to home for locals, strengthening workforce pathways across Melbourne’s north-west.

Set to open in 2028, the campus will deliver industry-aligned training spaces, community-focused facilities and sustainable design features that reflect Melton’s current and future needs.

Before the ribbon is cut, interim training is already underway in Melton, ensuring locals can start building skills now while construction progresses. This includes the Certificate III in Information Technology (ICT30120), a Free TAFE* program which commenced earlier this month at Western BACE as part of Kangan Institute’s interim training model.

A precinct designed for future jobs

Purpose-built specialist facilities will support training in construction and trades, digital technology, clean energy, foundation programs and more.

Students will have access to dedicated workshops for construction, electrical, gas fitting, welding, refrigeration and plumbing, alongside emerging technology and cybersecurity learning environments.

A welcoming, community-centred campus

The Melton campus will feature a student hub, library and Indigenous Engagement Centre, creating inclusive spaces for learning, connection and support.

First Nations perspectives will be embedded throughout the design through consultation with the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation.

A connected and sustainable location

Located at the corner of Hollingsworth Drive and Ferris Road in Cobblebank, the campus will sit close to public transport, schools, Cobblebank Village, Western BACE and the future hospital precinct.

This project is targeting a 5-Star Green Star rating, supporting long-term sustainability and environmental performance.

High-quality construction and local jobs

Construction will be delivered by Hutchinson Builders, who bring extensive experience in complex education and community infrastructure projects. Their appointment marks a key milestone following the design launch earlier this year and ensures the Melton campus will be built to the highest standard.

Melton’s new campus is designed by Architectus and being delivered by Hutchinson Builders, with a $55 million investment from the Victorian Government.

The Melton campus will complement Kangan Institute’s Broadmeadows campus and future Sunbury campus, creating a connected network of training pathways across Melbourne’s north-west.

Comments attributable to Deputy Premier, Minister for Skills and Training The Hon Gabrielle Williams MP:

"Today works start on the new campus, meaning Melton residents will soon have access to world class facilities so they can gain in-demand skills for well-paying jobs, close to home.”

“We’re investing in new TAFE campuses across the state and developing Victoria’s skilled workforce for the future.”

Quotes attributable to Kangan Institute CEO Laura Macpherson:

"Today’s sod turn marks a major step forward for Melton. Construction means we’re now building a campus designed around practical, local access to skills training for the local community.”

“This new campus will deliver hands-on learning, industry-aligned facilities and clear pathways into work for people across Melbourne’s outer west.”

“We’re proud to be working with Hutchinson Builders on this project – creating a modern, accessible training hub that will strengthen Melton’s future workforce and open doors for learners for years to come.”
