Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning

What is VCAL?

VCAL is the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning. It's a hands-on option for students in Years 11 and 12. It is a great way to go if you wish to complete Year 11 or 12 and move straight into a career or further study.

Like the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), VCAL is an accredited secondary certificate.

Please note that the minimum age required to study VCAL at a foundation level is 15 years old.

VCAL Programs 2014

VCAL at Kangan Institute offers students an opportunity to gain practical work-related experience, develop literacy and numeracy skills for the workforce and build personal skills that are important for all aspects of life. Students will be able to start at the VCAL level which best meets their skills and abilities.

This course is ideal for students that prefer to learn in an alternative setting to secondary school or who want to engage back into education after some time away from school. This course is also ideal for students who want to participate in structured workplace learning. Completing your VCAL creates a pathway to further study at TAFE.

The following programs are all subject to enrolment numbers.

Allied Health VCAL

  • Broadmeadows/Richmond campus
  • Intermediate/Senior

Students enrolled in this course will complete a Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance at the same time as their VCAL certificate. This course is designed for students who would like to develop entry level skills and knowledge in the Health industry while also completing their senior secondary certificate.

Career Pathways include:

Allied health assistant in nutrition, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech pathology and podiatry.

Carpentry VCAL

  • Broadmeadows/Richmond campus
  • Intermediate/Senior

This course is designed for students who would like to complete a VCAL certificate and a certificate II in building and construction at the same time.

Career pathways include: Carpenter, joiner and builder.

Creative Industries VCAL

  • Broadmeadows campus
  • Intermediate/Senior

This course is designed for creative young people who would like to undertake a VCAL certificate. Students will complete tasters in art, drama, dance and music.

Fashion VCAL

  • Richmond campus
  • Intermediate/Senior

This course prepares students with the knowledge and skills to achieve competencies that will enhance their employment prospects in the clothing or clothing-related industries. Students will gain an introductory overview of fashion design. Selected units from the certificate III qualification give a greater focus on sewing.

Career pathways include: Clothing and soft furnishing production worker, fashion designer, footwear worker, patternmaker and grader, garment technician, fashion or textile merchandiser and style forecaster.

General VCAL with a VET in Schools Program

  • Broadmeadows/Richmond campus
  • Foundation/Intermediate/Senior

This course is designed for those who would like to complete a VCAL qualification and a VETiS (Vocational Education and Training in School) program at the same time. You will gain skills which will increase your employability, such as literacy and numeracy, problem solving and planning.

This course will also provide basic knowledge and practical skills associated with working in the various vocational industries.

Hospitality VCAL

  • Broadmeadows campus
  • Intermediate/Senior

Students enrolled in this course will complete a Certificate II in Kitchen Operations at the same time as their VCAL qualification. They will also undertake some additional units in front office and tourism areas.

This course is designed for students who would like to develop entry level skills and knowledge in the hospitality industry while also completing their senior secondary certificate.

Career pathways include: Kitchen hand, chef, food and beverage attendant, waiter and barista.

IT and Multimedia VCAL

  • Richmond campus
  • Intermediate/Senior

This VCAL program provides students with the opportunity to learn design skills, concept development, 3D design, basic web design and drawing techniques. Students will also use industry specific software such as Photoshop, Publisher and Creative Suite.

Career pathways include: Word processing operator, data processing operator, information technology support technician, information technology manager, network manager, database administrator, computer programmer, multimedia developer, 3d modelling and animation, video editing and instructional designer.

Sport & Recreation VCAL

  • Richmond campus
  • Intermediate/Senior

Students enrolled in this course will complete a Certificate II in Sport and Recreation including some certificate III level units. This course is designed for students who would like to develop entry level skills and knowledge into the sport and recreation industry while also completing their senior secondary certificate.

Career pathways include: Recreation officer/coordinator, gymnasium instructor, personal trainer, recreation officer, community sports manager, leisure / recreation officer, sports massage, sports psychologist, coach, outdoor education instructor, sports person and exercise physiotherapist.

Trade Experience Program - Automotive

  • Docklands and Richmond campus
  • Intermediate/Senior

This course is designed to give students the opportunity to try units in motor mechanics, paint and panel, auto electrical, motorcycle and motorsport while also completing their VCAL certificate.

Students will be able to apply skills developed through VCAL units to various automotive projects as well as complete a practical placement in the automotive industry. Students will also gain an automotive pre-apprenticeship in the last six months of the course greatly improving their chances of securing an apprenticeship or job after completion.

Career pathways include:

Light vehicle motor mechanic, vehicle serviceperson, spare parts manager, automotive engineer, panel beater

Trade Experience Program - Construction

This course is designed to give students the opportunity to try units in carpentry, electrical, bricklaying and landscaping while also completing their VCAL certificate, greatly improving their chances of securing a successful job and career in the future.

Students will be able to apply skills developed through VCAL units to various industry projects as well as complete a practical work placement. Students will also complete a building and construction pre-apprenticeship in the last six months of the course.

Career pathways include: Carpenter, joiner, builder, construction worker, brick layer, tiler, cabinet maker

Trade Experience Program - Triple Trade

  • Broadmeadows campus
  • Intermediate/Senior

This course is designed to give students the opportunity to try a variety of units in the electrical, engineering and automotive areas while also completing their VCAL certificate, greatly improving their chances of securing a successful job and career in the future.

Students will be able to apply skills developed through VCAL units to various industry projects as well as complete a practical placement work placement. Students will also gain a pre-apprenticeship in their chosen industry area in the last six months of the course.

Career pathways include: Electrician, Mechanic, Auto-electrician, Engineer

VCAL for Indigenous Australians

  • Broadmeadows campus
  • Foundation/Intermediate/Senior

This course is designed specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People; however this does not exclude non-Indigenous people. This program focuses on hands-on learning and practical skills, supported by tutors, mentors and Koori community Elders. On completion students can pathway into further education, training or employment.
