Ali Alabonajem came to Australia from Iraq in 2022 with his wife and children. Although he already held a university qualification in Biomedical Science, he knew improving his English would be essential to achieving his future goals.
Since starting English language studies at Kangan Institute in 2025, Ali has successfully completed Certificate III in EAL (Access) (22640VIC) and is now studying the Certificate III in EAL (Further Study) (22645VIC).

"Moving to Australia with my family was a new beginning, but language was one of my biggest challenges. Even though I had a university qualification from Iraq, I didn't feel confident communicating in English or continuing my studies.
When I started studying at Kangan Institute, I was nervous about returning to the classroom after more than 20 years. At first, it was difficult, but my teachers encouraged me to participate, ask questions and practise without being afraid of making mistakes. Over time, my confidence grew.
Today, I can communicate independently, make phone calls, attend appointments and handle everyday situations without relying on someone else to help me. That confidence has changed my life.
The Certificate III in EAL (Further Study) has helped me improve my speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, while also preparing me for future study. I've learned how to take notes, research information, give presentations and use academic English.
My goal is to continue my education and pursue a career in translation and interpreting. Kangan Institute has given me the skills, confidence and belief that I can achieve that goal. It's helped me build a future for myself and my family."
