"Hi, my name’s Liz and I’m currently studying the Diploma of Nursing at Kangan Institute in Essendon. Having come from a different professional background, I was looking for a change and wanted a career where I could truly help people and make a difference. The government subsidy (Free TAFE) made starting this course possible for me-it was a real game changer.
Coming back to study as a mature age student was daunting at first. I wondered if it was the right time, especially seeing so many younger students. But I’ve learned there’s no right or wrong age to start. If you’re ready to improve your life and help others, just go for it.
There are different ways Kangan Institute provides support, from teachers to student support services, so help is available when I need it. My family has also been a huge support, keeping me motivated through the challenges.
I’m aiming to finish my Diploma, then go on to a Bachelor’s and maybe even a Master’s in nursing. Age isn’t holding me back - I’m determined to go the extra mile.
For anyone considering this qualification, my advice is to have good time management and look after your mental health. There’s a lot of reading and assessments, but it’s all worth it when you realise how much you’re learning.
The best part of my study day? That feeling when you finish an assessment and hit submit - knowing you’ve achieved something and are one step closer to your goal.
I’m so glad I chose this path."
