From New Zealand to Nursing: Manreet's Journey to a Career in Healthcare

When Manreet Kaur Gill first came to Melbourne, she was navigating life as a new mum, settling into a new country and considering what the next chapter of her career might look like. One thing never changed: her passion for healthcare.

"I always wanted to work in a hospital. Even as a child, I was fascinated by how the human body worked and how healthcare professionals could make such a difference in people's lives."

Although she initially pursued laboratory science and worked in healthcare support roles, nursing remained her ultimate goal. After moving to Melbourne and researching her options, she discovered Kangan Institute's Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121).

"The Kangan Institute’s admissions team was always responsive. Every question I had was answered promptly, whether it was about study options, course structure or balancing study with family life. That made the decision much easier."

As a new mother, flexibility and affordability were important factors in her decision.

"Free TAFE was a game changer for me. Cost absolutely influences your decisions when you have a young family. Being able to access subsidised training and spread my material costs made nursing possible."

Returning to study after a break came with challenges, but Manreet quickly embraced Kangan Institute's flipped learning model.

"At first it was very different to what I was used to. But once I adjusted, I loved it. Everything is available online, there are videos, resources and support materials. It allows you to come to class ready to focus on practical learning." "At first it was very different to what I was used to. But once I adjusted, I loved it. One of the most rewarding aspects of her experience has been learning alongside a diverse group of students and being supported by dedicated teachers.

"I was blown away by how diverse the classroom was. People from different cultures, backgrounds and age groups all supporting each other. The role plays, practical classes and group activities really helped me build confidence and make connections."

She also credits her teachers for creating an environment where students feel valued and capable of succeeding.

"All of my tutors have been incredibly supportive. They made everyone feel comfortable, regardless of their background or where they were in their learning journey."

Now more than halfway through her Diploma of Nursing, Manreet has completed placements in aged care and mental health settings and is exploring a range of future career opportunities.

"My dream is to work in emergency nursing or theatre nursing. But I also discovered I love teaching and helping other students learn. Studying Nursing has opened doors I never expected."

She believes her experience at Kangan Institute has shown her that learning doesn't have an age limit.

"I used to think I wasn't good enough to study at a higher level. But studying gave me confidence. It made me realise how passionate I am about nursing and about continuing my learning journey."

For anyone considering nursing, her advice is simple:

"You need to invest the time, but if you're passionate about it, every bit of effort is worth it. Nursing is about helping people, learning continuously and making a real difference. If that's what you want to do, go for it."
