About me:
My name is Dylan Diakodimitriou and I am a 20 year old male student who is enrolled in Certificate III In Early Childhood Education And Care (CHC30121) at Kangan Institute.
My educational background consists of completing kindergarten, primary school, and high school scored VCE. From my start to finish with pre - TAFE education, I was never really interested in school or my classes as the environment always felt competitive with our knowledge and skills being compared. The students that were “better” than others received awards and prizes while the rest were expected to just try harder.
Originally after completing high school I wanted to enter a course for being a support worker for individuals with disabilities. However, many of the courses at the time were either too far away or required my ATAR to be well above 60, while mine was below 30. Before I chose Early Childhood Education, I was originally in another course, but after multiple failures within yet another environment that gave percentages and scores to my learning, I had lost my passion. After around half a year I had no idea where to go or what to do. I went back to the idea of some sort of care related work and looked more locally. After discovering Kangan institute, and seeing its close proximity to my home, I looked through the available courses.
Why I chose to study Certificate III In Early Childhood Education and Care
I found Certificate III In Early Childhood Education and Care through the Kangan Institute websites and I thought back on my time as a student up until this point. Throughout primary school and high school I had realised that I was always in the background as I was always either too nervous to speak up, too confused to understand complicated concepts, and too afraid to ask for help. I realised that I wanted no one to ever have to feel that way. I applied for the course with the goal of making sure every child grows up knowing that they are valued and welcome to use their rights to express themselves, their opinions, and be heard.
My time at TAFE
My time during the course has been the best years of my education. Whenever I succeed in an assignment I feel great accomplishment rather than the feeling of just scraping by like in my previous course. The lack of a percentage or score has removed the competitive nature that high school ingrained into my learning, and now I feel as if I can just do my best without feeling like my best is still worse than others. Kangan Institute has made me feel comfortable and confident in my education, and the amount of help and chances I receive removed that hopeless feeling I used to have when failing in my previous educations.
Career and Employment Goals
I have yet to participate in any form of employment, but I am being prepared as I will be going on placements soon. Knowing that I will be tested and trained in the real environment has taken a lot of the stress off my shoulders as I will not just be thrown into the deep end with only my knowledge. I am excited to build up my skills in the real environment and I am grateful that I am given the chance to prove myself.
