Supporting future health workers through the Australia Awards (AusAid) Scholarship

Kangan Institute is proud to support international students through the Australia Awards Scholarships, an Australian Government initiative administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). Australia Awards Scholarships help build skills, leadership and capability in partner countries while enabling students to undertake quality education and training in Australia.

What the Australia Awards Scholarship provides

Australia Awards Scholarships are fully funded and generally include full tuition fees, return air travel, an establishment allowance, a contribution to living expenses, Overseas Student Health Cover, and access to academic and English language support where required.

Building practical skills for health and community services

At Kangan Institute, Health and Community courses are delivered through hands-on, industry-aligned training that reflects real workplace environments and prepares students to contribute meaningfully to health and community services.

Student stories: turning opportunity into impact

Another example of the impact of the Australia Awards Scholarship is Payia Yangsaoye, who comes from a minority community in Laos where access to higher education, particularly overseas study, is limited. Payia’s background working as a ChildFund Pass It Back coach sparked her passion for supporting children and young people, and motivated her to pursue further study in community services.

‘It is a dream come true to move here to pursue a higher education in Australia,’ Payia shares. ‘I wanted to gain practical knowledge that I can apply in real-world situations and build a strong career in the future.’

While adapting to a new culture, language and education system has been challenging at times, Payia says these experiences have helped build her confidence and understanding. She plans to use the skills and knowledge gained through her studies at Kangan Institute to pursue job opportunities in her hometown and continue developing her professional career.

Investing in people, strengthening communities

Our current Australia Awards (AusAid) scholars at Kangan Institute are studying the Diploma of Community Services (CHC52025), a nationally recognised qualification that prepares graduates for meaningful roles supporting individuals, families and communities.

The course focuses on hands‑on, applied learning, equipping students with practical skills in communication, advocacy, case coordination and ethical practice. Students also gain a strong understanding of Australia’s community and social support systems, with learning delivered by industry‑experienced teachers and aligned to real‑world scenarios.

For Australia Awards scholars, the Diploma of Community Services provides a strong foundation to develop workforce‑ready skills that can be taken back to their home countries, supporting long‑term community development, social wellbeing and inclusive outcomes.

Australia Awards scholars are required to return to their home countries after completing their studies, supporting long-term development outcomes and strengthening global health and community systems.

Through practical, workforce-ready training, Kangan Institute is proud to contribute to this global development mission.
