Adult Migrant English Program
The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is funded by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs. The program provides free English language lessons to eligible migrants and humanitarian entrants aged 18 years and over. This includes all permanent visa holders, some temporary visa holders and citizens who previously held an eligible visa. Some migrant youth aged between 15 and 17 years of age may also be eligible.
The AMEP reforms
Key changes:
Migrants can now stay in the program longer and the previous 510-hour cap has been removed. People who were previously not eligible may now be eligible.
- You can now access unlimited hours of English classes until you reach vocational English
- You can apply to enrol, even if you’ve enrolled in AMEP before and have been living in Australia for many years
- You can keep studying, even if you’ve completed 510 hours (the previous limit), until you reach vocational English
In an AMEP class, you will learn English language skills to support you with work, further training/study and connecting with the community.
You will meet other migrants with similar backgrounds, experiences and goals, and you may make new friends. All of these will help you settle successfully in Australia.
Free child care*
Free child care is available for children who are under school age when you are studying in a face to face AMEP class. Please contact us on 1300 675 676 to find out more about free childcare assistance.
You may also be eligible to join the AMEP classes if you are:
- a migrant with an eligible temporary visa
- a refugee settling in Australia with a permanent visa
- a young person (15 to 17 years - youth programs available).

At Kangan Institute, we have dedicated English Language training classes for AMEP students in Melbourne.
Our classes are delivered on site in Broadmeadows, Craigieburn and Docklands.
We provide an exceptional level of support to students enrolling into the program, and ensure they have one-on-one access to teachers and pathway counsellors to achieve their English language goals.

English as Another Language (EAL) classes are offered at all levels. This starts at the Course in Preliminary Certificate in Spoken and Written English (10725NAT) and ends Certificate IV in Spoken and Written English (10730NAT).
