Shifting gears: Phoebe’s road to auto mastery after school

As tens of thousands of Victorian students consider their next steps beyond school, one young woman is proving that success can take many forms.

Phoebe Pratt once imagined a future in astrophysics, but when the right course wasn’t available, she took a retail job while figuring out her next move.

It wasn’t until she had to repair her first car that everything clicked – and a surprising passion for mechanics was born.

Phoebe picked up work at dealerships while pursuing a hands-on apprenticeship. In 2025, she graduated with a Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology at Kangan Institute and became a key team member at a local workshop in Seaford.

“The apprenticeship has made me come out of my shell – from someone who didn’t know anything, to now diagnostics and repairing so people are able to use their family car and pick up kids from school,” she said.

She’s also gained a rare skill along the way – LPG diagnostics and repairs, a niche area many general mechanics no longer cover.

For Phoebe, the support she received at Kangan Institute was pivotal. Her teacher Joe recognised her drive and helped tailor her learning journey, enabling her to fast-track her studies and build confidence in her abilities.

“Joe made it very obvious that he believed in me. He had my back and got me to where I needed to be. That was exactly what I needed – someone to recognise I was passionate about what I do and want to help me get there.”

Now a qualified mechanic, Phoebe continues to broaden her expertise through hands-on experience in diesel truck and machinery repair.

Outside of her day job, she dedicates evenings and weekends to learning everything from servicing and welding to fabrication and onsite diagnostics in the construction industry.

Phoebe is now exploring further upskilling - motivated by growing commitment to the trade and a hunger to keep learning.

"It's been really good getting guidance from teachers and people in the industry. I can go and do anything, anywhere. There’s so many possibilities for what I can get into."

More than 200 courses are available at Kangan Institute, from automotive and trades to health, digital and more. Explore options at kangan.edu.au
