Honouring Virginia Simmons AO

We are saddened by the passing of Virginia Simmons AO on 16 September 2025.

Virginia was a trailblazer in the VET sector as the first woman to lead a TAFE institute in Victoria and the longest-serving female CEO in the state’s TAFE history. Her leadership at both Kangan Institute and Chisholm Institute transformed how TAFE served communities.

Virginia championed recognition of prior learning, drove policy reform, and worked to elevate public perception of TAFE. Her deep commitment to social justice opened doors for disadvantaged learners and reshaped access to quality education.

Virginia’s legacy includes founding the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation, which has supported thousands of students. Even in retirement, she continued to lead. Advising governments, conducting national reviews, and contributing to international skills development.

In 2010, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia. In 2024, Virginia was awarded the Lynne Kosky Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Virginia Simmons AO leaves behind a profound legacy of equity, excellence, and impact. We honour her contributions and extend our deepest condolences to her family, colleagues, and the broader VET community.
