One year old and already making an impact: Health and Community Centre of Excellence

It’s been one year since Kangan Institute’s Health and Community Centre of Excellence opened in Broadmeadows – and in that time, more than 1,600 local students have trained for careers in nursing, health and community services.

The milestone comes as demand for health and care workers continues to grow, with more than 90,300 new workers expected in Victoria over the next three years.

The anniversary also coincides with seven years of Free TAFE* in Victoria and the protection of the Free TAFE Guarantee in Parliament this week, supporting students to train for in demand health and care roles without the cost of tuition fees.

Students from suburbs including Roxburgh Park and Meadow Heights are already preparing to step into roles that directly support the local community – many through Free TAFE.

Diploma of Nursing student Ceylan Sahinkaya, from Roxburgh Park, said studying nursing felt like the right step towards a rewarding and people-focused career.

“I wanted to choose a career where I could help others and continue learning while making a positive impact,” she said.

Currently balancing study with retail work, Ceylan says Free TAFE has helped make her career change possible by reducing financial stress and supporting her education journey.

“Nursing is what I want to do in the future, and Free TAFE has made it much easier for me to work towards that goal. (It) made it easier for me to study, especially in a well-designed facility.”

Ceylan plans to complete a Bachelor of Nursing after her diploma and is interested in pursuing pathways in midwifery or emergency nursing.

Other students include Olga Pereira, a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care student, who is retraining for a career in early childhood education after moving from Brazil.

“I was a software tester – a comfortable career – but teaching was a childhood dream for me,” Olga shared.

The Meadow Heights resident enrolled at Kangan Institute’s Health and Community Centre of Excellence, just minutes away from home, after visiting the campus during induction.

“I visited this building and I fell in love. It has an amazing sim lab, giving me an idea of what it’ll be like in a real centre,” she said.

Now close to completing her certificate and planning to progress to the diploma, Olga says support from teachers and availability of Free TAFE had made a significant difference in her journey.

“The teachers are amazing. I really feel they really want the class to succeed in what we’re doing. They push us to do better,” she said.

“Free TAFE give me this opportunity – you don’t need to worry about fees, just come here and concentrate on your studies.”

The Health and Community Centre of Excellence supports training across health and community services at Kangan Institute’s Broadmeadows Campus, including a range of Free TAFE* options. The Certificate III in Individual Support (CHC33021), Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121), Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC30121) are among the Free TAFE courses offered at Kangan Institute’s Broadmeadows Campus. Hear from some of our other students

Aaliyah Boomgaard, Diploma of Nursing

For Craigieburn resident Aaliyah, a career in nursing was inspired early.

Growing up, Aaliyah spent a lot of time in hospitals supporting a family member who was undergoing treatment for leukemia. It was there that she first noticed the impact nurses could have – not just through clinical are, but through compassion.

“I saw the work the nurses did,” she said. “I thought it was really cool how they were not only able to help patients but also provide a caring environment.”

Having recently moved to Australia, Aaliyah said Free TAFE played a significant role in making study possible.

“Normal university can be quite a lot, especially with me having just moved. Free TAFE helped with the financial struggle,” she said.

Aaliyah said she particularly enjoys the hands-on learning at the Health and Community Centre of Excellence.

“I really enjoy the labs,” she said. “Having a hands-on environment is really helpful for what I’m going to be experiencing later on.”

Juwayriyah Loukil, Diploma of Nursing

Juwayriyah’s pathway into nursing began with her VCE Vocational Major (Allied Health) – a journey recognised with Kangan Institute’s 2026 Foundation and Education Centre Achievement Award.

“I really enjoyed studying allied health so I chose to continue and do nursing here at Kangan,” she said. “I really like the option of Free TAFE. It removes the stress of debt, so you can focus more on studying.”

Juwayriyah hopes to pursue a career as a registered nurse and explore options to become a midwife. For now, she’s loving her time at Kangan Institute.

“So far, I’m really enjoying it. It’s close to where I live, and it’s new and it makes the hands-on experience easier,” she said. “I would recommend Kangan Institute. Health is the best because of the new building – a lot of options for study. They really have everything.”

Penelope Sekeris, Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care

Penelope chose this course to get more hands-on experience and formal knowledge to work with preschool-aged children.

Previously, Penelope worked in bush kinder and playgroup programs – spending much of her time outdoors, helping children build confidence, curiosity and practical skills.

“I want to stay in the industry because I love working with children,” Penelope said. “I love their curiosity and engagement with learning. They’re so keen to know about the work and I love facilitating that and giving them opportunities to explore.”

Penelope said Free TAFE made a significant difference to her ability to study.

“Free TAFE made a big difference. It’s meant I’ve been able to focus on my studies for a full year without needing to worry about working at the same time,” she said. “That’s really important because we do placements in early childhood services and we’re unable to work at the same time.”

She also praised the support of her teachers and the learning environment at the centre.

“The teachers have been wonderfully supportive. They’ve promoted our strengths and given us lots to think (including) where we need to work on ourselves so we can move forward in the workforce,” Penelope said.

“The facility is amazing. It’s so well-equipped, with so many resources and material that can be used for fostering children’s love for learning. It’s given me lots of ideas of how I’d like to set up a room in a service one day when I’m working.”
